Who cares?

Anna asked a great question on her blog -- why do some people care about issues of social justice, environment, poverty, etc. -- and other people just DON'T?

This is free -- a follow up question for any takers:

What inspires people to "care"? Why do some people care, and some people just . . . don't? What do you think inspires people to build value systems and prioritize certain things over others?

I frustrates me when people say, "I don't care," because not caring has cost so many people their futures . . . their dreams . . . their lives. What are examples of this?

An example could be someone losing out on something fun because they "didn't care" to listen to instructions.

I think some people are just too naive and they don't know enough about the environment and stuff to really worry about it. Or maybe they have so much money that they take for granted how little other people have.

I think it has to do with what type of person you are and what you beleive in. Some people don't feel very strongly about things so they don't stand up for those things. Other people may care very strongly about those things.

I think that sometimes people decide not to "care" if they are afraid of the thing there not "caring" about, and think that by paying no attention to it and treating it like it doesn't exist it will just go away. In other situations when someone is embarrassed about something they will say they don't care about the situation so they can feel better about the whole situation. Like if you got an F on a test, instead of asking for help some people would just decide they don't care about there grades so that makes it o.k. I think the last situation is peer pressure. For example if all your friends "don't care" about what the teacher is saying you may decide you "don't care" either to make yourself look cool.

I agree with Chloe, you could not pay attention to whaat is happening around you so it would be hard to care. But if you were close to an issue than it would mean a lot to you.

Some people might not care because they don't think that it will affect them. Some people might not care who the VP is (just an example), because the VP doesn't do that much. But when was the last time another (and another, and another, yada yada yada) car bombing in Iran/Iraq really affected you? And then, why do some people care about things that don't affect you (like above), like (not to be cliche,) the price of tea in China?

Answer:
I think someone might not care about these topics as much as someone else would be because they are not as smart in that topic, so they might not think that is that important.

Follow-up:
I think in order for you to care about something, you need to have an attachment to it. To have an attachment to something, you could have had an experience about that, a family member has had an experience about that, or you think that you could make a difference about that topic. Something that people could care about could be something like racism, because their family had been hurt by racism, or that they thought that they could make a difference about stopping racism. I do not think anyone can not care at least a little bit about most topics.

Some people don't care because they are oblivious of what there is to care about like sort of what Chloe said. If you don't know about it, then you don't know what to do about it. Like global warming. We were oblivious to global warming many years ago, but now many people are trying to stop it by using eco-efficient lightbulbs, using less gas, etc. A way we can stop this problem of not caring because we don't know is education!

I think some people don't care about certain issues because maybe thay aren't very well educated on the topic. Also because they don't don't know how to help or illiminate the issue.

Some people don't "care" about things they don't understand or believe in. Or things they don't believe are right.

I think that people only care, or only want to care if it involves them somehow. I mean, if u see something in the news that says someones been murdered, u say thats sad and move on. If you see in the news your cousings been murdered then you'll care alot more then if someone u didnt know died.

I think "not caring" means that you really do care but you don't want to show it, It's like saying maybe, if someone asks you who your going to vote for and you say " I don't care " It's like your saying, 'i'm to embaressed and am too shy to bring up my ideas, maybe someone else will say what i want to do or have.
