Hello, class!
I attached the Dateline video strip for the Tank man video here. We only watched Section 1: "The Prologue" during class today. Enjoy watching the other sections. Pay special attention to section 6, because that is the video clip where researchers specifically focus on censorship as we discussed in class. Please post your comments and responses here. Focus specifically on the question: Is censorship justifiable? When and why?

I watched the sixth video about censorship and this make me wonder, does America have something they aren't telling us that has happened? Maybe this is only when you live in a communist country, where they try to make everybody the same. I think it would be kinda scary to find out that even something like this was kept from your country because it would make me wonder if they were keeping other things from us.
Right now I'm reading the Giver and Geneva's response made me think about how scary it is that the community is hiding everything from the communtity.
I also watched the sixth video and it really socked me that those students looked at the picture and din't even have the faintest clue what had happened. It's scary knowing that the government has the power to keep anything from the general public.
Agreeing with Geneva and Anna, it is very scary to know that this degree of censorship has and still is happening, in this present day. I don't think this kind of censorship is justifiable because it is unfair to keep people who deserve to know what happened from knowing. Also to know that a man had been sentenced 10 years in prison for sending some Chinese government papers to New York is unimaginable.
The people in that government might not care if its justifiable or not. If those images get out people will start asking questions, the people that survived, then those people will start telling others about the incident, word will spread and the government will fear losing its power.
p.s.: These people killed civilians to keep their position in the government, that is not justifiable.(indirectly though).
P.S.: I have another poem and question on my site
Censorship is like lieing. You don't let people hear or see what you are trying to block. When you lie you don't tell people what you don't want them to know. You hide things from people. You only tell them what you want them to know and nothing you don't
One major key in sensorship is the governments fear, in this case China's communist government. If you think about it, the massive population of China could overtake any goverment with a little effort. Knowing this, the Chinese government did not give the population anything to revolt about, by censoring out all the bad occurances. In my opinion the communists in China must have been VERY afraid of a revolt caused by an issue that would not sit with the people of China.
