So, class: I looked up a definition for "social justice" on dictionary.com to satiate your relentless thirst for knowledge. (Gold star for the first person to post the definition for "satiate.") Here are the results:
1 dictionary results for: social justice
Webster's New Millennium™ Dictionary of English - Cite This Source - Share This 1 dictionary results for: social justice
| Main Entry: | social justice |
| Part of Speech: | n |
| Definition: | the distribution of advantages and disadvantages within a society |
I am somewhat disapointed with this definition. Let our references to SOCIAL JUSTICE ISSUES refer particularly to issues within society in which advantages and disadvantages are not equitably distributed. In other words, "social justice issues" are concerns within society in which certain individuals or people groups are somehow treated unfairly, or face a particular disadvantage that is forced upon them.
Some examples provided in class today:
1) Extreme poverty in underdeveloped nations
2) Lack of pure drinking water for some communities
3) Illiteracy (the inability to read and write) in certain communities/regions
4) Racism -- for example, in employment
5) Human trafficking -- using other people (often children) as slaves
Looking at the definition and explanation given above as well as the examples we briefly discussed in class, what is another example of a social justice issue that you can think of? If you cannot think of a new one, which one of these are you particularly passionate about? Why? What information would you love to discover concerning that particular issue (besides "why does this happen")?

Another example I can think of is overall appearance. This is similar to racism but what I mean by it is if someone is new to the school and they are in trashy clothing (old ripped clothing) doesn't mean that they aren't a good person. I knew someone who didn't dress very well but was a great person!!
One example of a bad social Justice system is when everyone is very rich or very poor. This is when everyone is immensely rich or so poor they can barely feed themselves.
One example off Social Justice Issues that I can think off is bad influnces. Sometimes these influences can turn people aganist their thoughts just to "be cool."
I think illiteracy could be a good topic for this project seeing as this is an English class, or foster kids or human trafficking because we are kids too. My question about human trafficking is why is this issue barely ever mentioned if it is so big? Wouldn't this be brought up more in newspapers and news channels?
Another social injustice is labeling because a lot of people are labeld into certain groups like geek nerd, etc. As an honors student, it seems as if we are labeld like "your so smart, how come you have to use a dictionary, or calculator, etc..
One Social Justice Issue that I can think of is a country invading another country. This is bad because the invading country is not exactly saying "come on over and terrorize our people and economy". One example is when Russia invaded Georgia, also satiate means to give too much to (Webster's New Pocket Dictionary)
I really like Martha's idea of labels. I absolutely HATE being labeled. One thing I hate the most is being called a "band geek". I don't understand why just because I play and instrument I have to be labeled in a bad way. Why is doing something different from others a bad thing? I think labels really hurt people even if they are good. I think people should realize that they need to get to know a person before they put a label on who that person is. That seems to be a good example of social injustice to me. Instrumentalists Unite!
Oh, oh! Satiate means satisfy (or something along those lines...quench maybe?)
I agree with D. Brown
I think another social injustice is normal or not normal. In junior high, to be normal, you need o.k. grades, cool gadgets, cool clothes, and lots of money. Many people think if you don't have all of these, you are weird or not popular.
Though I can not think of another example, I am extremly passionate about illiteracy because I believe that reading can take you other places and often times make you relax. I would really like to know some places close to hear with this issue and how we can change this.
another example is people who cannot afford or do not have access to enough food to survive off of.
Another example is taxes. At the moment, it carves a huge financial wound in people without much money, but barely dents those with more money. A tad bit unfair if you ask me.
An example of social injustice I can think of is when people are made fun of because they are different. By that I mean that they act differently or like different things.
Social injustice is something primative animals don't notice don't care, they live they help each other, if we have the bigger brains why can't we make better desicions?
Another example could be how injured or disabled are treated differently from those who are healthy and fine.
One example of yellow jounralism is how some news agencies bent the truth a little to give a false advantage to one of the candidates.
